Horrifying footage of a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 air ambulance crashing at a drag strip in Iceland. The pilot and two crew were killed, the copilot survived. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! blog writes, "The plane had transported a patient to Reykjavik, Iceland and was returning to Akureyri when it was placed on hold to the west of the airport, where the dragstrip was being prepared for an air race." Video after the jump, if the imbed works.

The speed and angle at which that plane went down makes me wonder what the hell happened. It also makes it incredible the copilot survived

So wait, were they attempting to land on the drag strip or was this some sort of mechanical failure / pilot error.

A King Air is not a fighter plane.

CFIT. Wonder if someone bumped the autopilot off.

Liveleak provides more info, saying that plane was fully functional and well maintained. Copilot has not commented, but it is known that he made remarks to the captain about dangerous flying. Captain had requested a flyby because he had friends at the strip. Witnesses said he approached "dangerously fast and low".

Pilot had requested flyby of drag strip, and witnesses said he approached dangerously low and fast. He was probably showing off, and the copilot, who survived, had spoken to the captain before about dangerous flying. I think the pilot just screwed up.

Ugh. Now I hope my comment was right.

You would almost expect better from a medical transport pilot, but then you realize this is Iceland...

I sense a darwin award in this man's... future? <_<

Looks like the same phenomenon that got the B-52 in Spokane all those years ago. Sharp bank in relatively straight flight, you start loosing altitude and you have no height or time to recover.

How anyone survived that is beyond me. Famous last words. "Hey guise, watch this"

That was my first thought. The video of that Buff is stuck in my mind.

Same shenanigans killed a b52 crew at 94 Fairchild air show and in 2010 a C17 display team at Elmendorf in Alaska. Good pilots know who the dangerous ones are and if they're smart they'll refuse to fly with any cowboys. The envelope is too small for any asshatery.

Idiot pilot. Shit like this pisses me off so much.
This is why I'm all for removing the pilot from the cockpit...

Definitely not, but it sure is a beautiful plane.
